Tasting Note No.23
The grenache vines were planted by Ben Jenke in the 1940's. Grapes picked in April 1999, bottled March 2000. Winemaker: Kim Jenke. This is only the second release of straight grenache from this producer.
Colour surprisingly light cherry, very much like a Victorian pinot noir. Sweet raspberry, ripe white cherry nose. Medium bodied palate, almost light with excellent moutful of sweet fruit. Lot's of exciting flavours. Very tasty, finishing with perfect, palate cleansing acidity. A very well balanced delightful wine, at it's absolute peak now. Needs no further cellaring. I really enjoyed it, a stylish example of modern grenache. Nothing like (some of) D'Arenberg's 'The Custodian' that is usually fuller bodied with a hot alcoholic finish. This Jenke wine is a very elegant and fine style. The deep and flavourful taste sensation I believe, came from the old vines. Very well worth AU $21.
