Budget dinner wines

Post by Adam »

I got a phone call this morning from a friend who is organising a large dinner meeting, he asks for advice on which of the following he should pour:

Wolf Blass Eagle Hawk range
Penfolds Rawsons Retreat range
Debortolli Sacred Hill Range

What do you think :?: :?: and no...beer is not possible as a substitute :!:

Had the Penfolds Rawson Retreat cab/shiraz at a 21st last week and was quite impressed for what it is and given its lowly status in the penfolds range - what I particulalrly liked was it didn't have any of that sweet fruit cordial nose or palate - actually is was quite mid weight.

I've never been taken with the Rawson's Retreat wines, or the Sacred Hill line, very simple flavours.

If it's the DeBortoli thing then the Deen range could be the go; their Durif and Verdelho make an interesting change to the typical wines.

Fitwer me though I grab the Eaglehawk, the Riesling tastes dollars better than it costs at the reds are servicable as well.

Adam,

For a little bit more why not try the Penfolds Koonunga Hill range. I find the 2001 vintage quite reasonable especially the Shiraz Cabernet at Liquorland for $11.99 per bottle. You get additional 10% discount by the dozen. I recently had a dinner party for about 50 people (all drinkers) and there is nothing left from the 3 cases I bought.

Cheers,

Steve,

Unfortunately I am in Korea so its not quite as easy as just paying the extra. He is sourcing them through the Australian Embassy and they still cost about AUD $20 each!! Koonunga Hill retails here for around AUD $50.

I told him to go for the eaglehawk riesling and the shiraz/cab/merlot in the end...

Thanks all...
