G'day
I purchased a couple of these a few years ago, and I have opened a couple of younger vintages since. I don't recall opening one of these, so here we are. I also don't drink enough Northern Rhone, and should investigate this region more.
Deep purple in the glass, with plenty of depth. A fascinating nose (for an Aussie shiraz drinker) with considerable blackberry fruit, tar, and offset by rose petals and earthiness. The palate is also fascinating for different reasons - raspberry, cranberry, and juicy dark berries. There's an interesting texture or mouthfeel that is quite viscous or thick (not like tar though) and ripe tannins are contributing to this. In contrast, the acid is almost mouthwatering and the wine is medium bodied while having an understated concentration.
So, a tasting note full of contrasts. I am, however, enjoying the wine.
Cheers
Allan
