Those who have storage at Kennards

Post by Teisto »

Just an FYI for those of you who store at Kennards.

I have 3 x 24 case cabinets in use. I wanted to have a look online to see if they are putting in a wine storage facility closer to my place at one of the new sites they are opening.

I checked out the prices and the same cabinets are now on at $29 per month. I am paying nearly double so gave them a call on Saturday and asked how do I cancel my existing contract and rejoin on the new highly discounted rates. They were happy enough to do it and resigned me on at the new rates.

However it is more an if you don't ask you don't get and I highlighted my disappointment at being a long term customer and offering me nothing except putting up the rates!

So strike now while the iron is hot .... ring them up and ask and I'm sure you'll get a better deal.

Cheers

Sorry guys - that's correct Vinh - it is at Artarmon where they are struggling to fill space - however still good leverage if you store elsewhere. Tell them you will up and move.

George - I was looking as they are building a new site at North Ryde which is a bit closer to me but not open yet so don't know whether they are doing wine.

West End in Brisbane have the same $29 deal for 24 cases. It's actually cheaper than for 12 cases, which is $35.

I'm seriously considering this as a storage option as my cellar is chockers full and I can't raid a cellar (for the good stuff), that is 100klm's away when I've had too many.

Cheers

Any chance you could let me know which kennards gave you the same pricing? Camperdown dont seem to want to match Artarmons pricing.

Vinh

I am already at Artarmon so renegotiated the Artarmon discounted price. I was paying $56 per month and told them I wanted the $29 pricing.

Artarmon are trying hard to fill all their spaces, not surprised their deals are the best. I had a good experience moving into a small space there recently, great deal, paid 2 years in advance, even better deal! Good staff too.

I just put all the 'don't touch for at least 3-4 years' stuff in there, set and forget. But all that cleared space just served to encourage a bit of a buying spree.... my 4 wine fridges are almost all full again. Duh. :-)

Ahhh righto, they wont budge on pricing for me,too bad Artarmon is too far away, plus it doesnt have 24/7 access like Camperdown. Guess i gotta wear the current pricing, d'ohhhh!

Have a room at Kennards Waterloo as well, in an odd 180 cases room(they only have a few available instead of the standard 135-145 cases room) for only $280 a month.

Called Kennards Annandale where I have a 36 case cupboard ($72) - they weren't interested in matching. When i gave him the quote he simply said 'move it. very cheap'. I suppose then, considerations are, lack of access, having to move the entire lot across, bigger storage space, Artarmon is across the bridge and not very handy..

Me too on 4 lockers. More money to reinvest into wine!

I moved my wine into Kennards Artarmon today. $15 for a small cupboard. Beats the $60 I was paying at Winevault for a larger cupboard that had become too large for my needs.

They gave me a voucher, giving both myself and a new customer a $50 credit. Would like to use it, but the twist is the new customer has to take it with them when they sign up. I live at Lane Cove, very close to the Kennards facility at Artarmon. If anyone is interested in picking up my voucher on the way through then let me know. Remember you'll get the $50 credit as well.

Update:
Called Kennards Camperdown again to try to renegotiate the rate for my 36 case cupboard, either to move to two 24 case cabinets and match the artarmon price, but they still wouldn't budge (seems each Kennards acts independently from each other despite being controlled by 'head office'). Ended up moving around 400 bottles over the weekend out of Kennards Camperdown and in to Kennards Rozelle.

Previous 36 cases $78/month Camperdown
New 2x 28 cases $70/month Rozelle

Kennards Rozelle aslo has a 150-180 case cupboard (I believe for around $150/month) would pay to give them a call as the website doesn't actually have what is available.

Net is a saving of $8 (WOW!), however now have a 20 case excess.

I had considered doing the exact same as you, but the thought of transfering 400 bottles myself turns me right off. How long did the whole transfer take you? Will you miss the 24 hour access of Camperdown? Thats what i will miss the most as i dont live that close to Camperdown and the 24hr access is gold.

I just took out yet another one at Artarmon. I moved the contents of a former 12 case storage unit to a 24 case one, and it works out much cheaper each month.... The guys that work there are really helpful and friendly - good people to do business with.

I've had wine stored there for a long time now - must be coming up to 13+ years, and have never had any problems.

Hi Vinh - The whole move took around 4hrs-5hrs, but that wasn't just loading and unloading boxes. I did a bit of a stocktake and sorted wines whilst I was there. I would say if you moved them all straight over(depending on the size of your vehicle - i did it in two trips) it would take around 1.5-2hrs, notwithstanding a slightly stiff back and tight hammys the following day.
As far as the 24hr access is concerned, I only once tried to access Camperdown after gates close (Saturday 7pm), and was denied access so it won't make a difference to me. Apparently there is 'after hours' access through a code which is available from 7am to 10pm. I don't envisage a run to Kennards at 3am will be on the cards any time in the near future.

With this heat in Sydney, has anyone popped into Kennards Artarmon to see how their air con infrastructure is coping?

Andrew,

I was in Artarmon last summer when the temp was 40+ and it seemed to be coping ok. Can't comment for the current season....

I've been doing some shuffling while I try and find someone to look at my fridges at home that aren't keeping temperature properly so I have been moving some stuff back in and there are no problems with the temp there

Bit of a general remark for those who have offsite storage (not just at Kennards) - what safeguards and guarantees do you have that your wines are being stored at the promoted temperature/humidity?

I have Kennards storage and don't recall seeing any temperature/humidity gauges on site to verify their puffery.

(I'm not suggesting I have any reason to believe there temperatures might be other than what they should be).

Does anyone have temperature gauges setup in their offsite lockers?

there's a manual and digital gauge displaying temp and humidity @ the camperdown kennards and i also keep a digital min/max temp/humidity gauge in my personal locker as well.

Interesting... Will have to keep an eye out next time I'm at my locker.

Have you ever had any cause for concern? What's the variance like between min/max?

Temp and humidity variance has never been a concern for me. MIn 12 and max 17 based on my gauge which sits fine with me

If I am paying good money for climate controlled storage I don't have as much tolerance for temperature variation so I finally moved my wine from Kennards Camperdown to a competitor last week. At times I had observed temperatures of over 17 degrees at Camperdown and in response to a complaint, Kennards stated "We are unable to guarantee an absolute temperature of any kind in this environment. The equipment is unable to provide this certainty and has a 1C +/- tolerance. This is further challenged by the fact that it is a public space with doors opening and closing, plus the current prevailing weather conditions." I was further told orally that Kennards considers up to 18 degrees is acceptable. While views vary a little, most experts consider a temperature of around 13 degrees for long term storage of premium wine and certainly no more than 15 degrees. The competitor I moved to states publicly that its storage is climate controlled to 14 degrees and 65 -75 % humidity. I will obviously monitor carefully but this provides me with some comfort compared to Kennards which will guarantee nothing.

Can't believe how expensive it is to store wine. I'm looking into it, but there just isn't a cheap option. Think I am going to team up with a few mates and look at doing it that way. Slightly more cost effective.
