April 2012 Purchases

Post by AndrewCowley »

3x 1999 Petaluma Coonawarra (amazed to find it, even more amazed at the price)
3x 2009 Henschke Keyneton Estate Euphonium (been waiting a couple of years for a good one of these to come along)
3x 2010 Teusner The Riebke Northern Barossa Shiraz (gotta see what the hype is all about)
3x 2009 Moss Wood Amys Cabernet Sauvignon (my first 2009 MR)

Just back from my annual pilgrimage to Central Otago, bought from Chard Farm (Pinots and Gewurz) and Felton Road (Pinots, Riesling, Chard).

Enjoyed a beautiful Easter trip to some local Canberra wineries.

For drinking soon:
2011 Clonakilla sauvignon blanc semillon
2009 Shaw Estate Isabella reserve riesling
2008 Shaw Estate shiraz cabernet
2009 Eden Road 2009 BDX (57% Merlot, 41% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot)
2009 Eden Road 2009 barbera cabernet

For keeping:
2010 Clonakilla shiraz viognier
2008 Shaw Estate Merriman reserve cabernet sauvignon
2010 Eden Road Hilltops shiraz

And a 2008 Penfolds RWT I found on a good discount ... my most expensive bottle ever, so I thought about this for quite a while. Finally swayed by all the good reports and looking forward to it in 5 years or so.

They started it about a year or 2 ago, gives you pre-release access to wine and special releases. Basically guarentees wine each year but you must have a standing order; slick marketing? I'm also a lakes folly A lister and a stonewaller, same thing I guess.

Actually Graham I think they gave a YY medallian to everyone on their email list before they closed it off ... they gave me one and I have never yet bought anything from them (maybe they gave those with a standing order a "gold" medallian or some-such to be truly clever marketing a la frequent flyers??).

Recent buys for me:
Regular Briar Ridge 6-pack... might cancel these its not the best members club in the hunter
Stanton and Kileen Vintage Port 1990 Magnum (actually a present from a friend for being best man at his wedding)
And some auction buys: Charles Melton Nine Popes 1990, d'arenberg 28 road mouvedre 2007, Wendouree Cab Malbec 1991, Tyrell's vat 6 Pinot 2009

Teusner The Riebke x 12 (see what all the fuss is about)
Teusner The Gentleman Cab Sav (seems a reasonable price point)
Cape Mentelle 2009 Trinders Cab Merlot (the reviews are stunning)
Tar and Roses 2009 Heathcote Shiraz (an old fave)
Kendall Jackson California Zinfandel 2009 (some how i think i will be disappointed - big fan of Cape Mentelle's)
Bunn 2007 Shiraz (curiosity)
Mike Press 2010 Cab Sav x 12 (he hardly ever disappoints)

Michael,

I bought these at a reasonable price. I had read about them in either the Gourmet Traveller Wine, or Halliday's magazine, can't remember which. I read the tasting notes and Halliday rates the wines extremely highly. To me any Barossa Grenache that has the words "Cherries and Earth" in the tasting notes has me interested. I am a bit apprehensive as Halliday rated it a 93, which concerns me. Most Barossa Grenache's he rates quite low as he doesn't like the confected style. For him to give it 93 does worry me a little. It is a single vineyard wine with only 4 year old oak so I'm hoping it will be the style I like. They should arrive later this week and I'll leave them for a month or two then I'll try one. I'm expecting them to be OK though.

On another note, we need to have another Brissie offline soon. What do you think?

Cheers

2001 Lake's Folly Cabernets
1976 Seppelt Para Liqueur Port (probably for my 40th in a few years time)
never underestimate the predictability of stupidity

Yep ... sold my Grange 1990s a while back so added a couple more 920s - under $au200 here in London on a bin-end clearance.
I havent seen 90A in the UK but may be over in L.A. soonish for an unconference - so might see if I can grab a few in the US.

picked up a couple of 2002 Tyrrell's Stevens Semillion at a Thirsty Camel in Coolum Beach. I was stoked to find these on a random encounter and am interested to see how they have fared being cellared in a sunny coast bottle-o for the last 5 years.
