PART 1 - Auswine Blind Tastings (April 30)

Post by markg »

Again, another thank you to Gavin and Robin for putting on a very pleasant evening of wine tastings, BBQ and giving us the opportunity to meet new people.

Wine 1
There was something about the nose on this one that I didn't like, a bit too sweet (residual sugar?), very plummy and a bit ripe. Menthol and black olive on the palate, short length and finishing slightly stalky. All in all a nice pizza wine. 2002 Hartz Barn Mailbox Merlot.

Wine 2
A dusty purple color, with a lovely nose of sweet plum, cherry and rasberry. The palate was quite dissapointing and I thought the length dropped off rather sharply and was a bit disjointed. Rufus Stone 2002 McLaren Vale Cab/Malbec.

Wine 3
A dark opaque purple color with a nose of milk chocolate and a little apricot. A nice entry of chocolate, plums and berries although the body was a bit narrow. Drying tannins, proibably a drink now wine. 2002 Summerfield Traditonal Cab/Merlot.

Wine 4
A dusty nose of Plum and cherries. A rich, silky palate of tar and black fruits, generous length and good structure. A bit of a suprise, it was revealed as one of Roger Pike's wines; a Mauris 2002 McLaren Vale shiraz, which has apparently been awarded 5 stars in the next release of WineState magazine. A pity only a limited quantity was made.

Wine 5
Deep purple color with a sweet, perfumed nose; cherries and a little hay ?? Layers of ripe berries and chocolate. Medium bodied, good structure and generous alcohol. Te-Aro Estate Harolds creek shiraz 2002.

running out of time... more tommorrow arvo.

Mark,

I wonder if you had a sus bottle of the Mail Box Merlot? Doesn't sound like what I tasted. Agreed with the rest of your comments on the wines i have tried. The Marius is terrific value.
Cheers

Mark

How are you able to write notes on wines you won't taste til May 30?

Graham
Chardonnay: A drink you have when there is no RED wine, the beer hasn't arrived and the water may be polluted

It may have just been my mouth, first wine of the night etc.

Glen didn't agree with me and thought I was being too harsh.

And yes, I think the Mauris was my favourite for the evening actually.
Cheers
