Wynnsday

Post by Mahmoud Ali »

Today is supposed to be Wynnsday and Wynns is releasing most of their wines. Some retailers had them on tasting today while others are planning to offer tastings on Saturday. The local Dan Murphy had most of them on tasting this afternoon.

I didn't take notes, mostly milled around and talked to the server and some of the customers, but did have a few impressions.

2008 Riesling: a nice wine, some development, but still young and fresh.
2010 Chardonnay: a bit odd, the nose had a grassy element that made me think sauvignon blanc; no oak to speak of and somewhat simple.
2008 Cab/Shiraz/Merlot: a good wine with upfront fruit and a grippy finish, has structure and could age.
2009 Shiraz: okay wine but a bit too sweet and simple for my liking.
2006 Cabernet: (served in lieu of the '08 that is being released) very good, dry, tannic, and structured; will not appeal to those who only like fruit as it is lurking below the surface; a wine to cellar.
2008 V & A Lane Shiraz: a very good shiraz, had dense sweet fruit as well as tannin and structure; could be drunk today with a thick red steak; a favourite at the tasting.
2008 V & A Lane Cabernet Shiraz: an excellent wine, the best of the lot; inky fruit tied to a solid backbone and a raft of tanninns; one for the cellar; more cab/shiraz please, please, please.
2007 Glengyle Cabernet: good wine but appeared somewhat disjointed after the Cabernet Shiraz; I had a hard time with this one.

Did anyone else get a chance to taste some of the wines?

Cheers................Mahmoud.

I tasted the 2006 Cab a few weeks ago and didn't like it at all, but was suffering from "pine mouth" at the time so didn't really taste it under fair circumstances. I agree that the primary fruit is buried well deep though. I dug deep into the bottle over the course of 3 days and still couldn't find it beneath all the timber. It was labelled as a cellared release... perhaps they should hang onto it for a few more years. I dont see the point of releasing a "cellared release" that still has so long to go to reach its prime.

I dashed into Dans last night and only had time to taste the 08 black label. My initial impressions were that it was a good solid, cabernet. Lots of good black fruit and plenty of tannin and acidity to keep it along. In fact I think I've still got a few of those tannins hiding in my gums somewhere. No bad at all.

I am hoping the 2008 Wynns Cab is a hell of a lot better than their 2007.

Will be trying some this weekend I think...

Totaly agree with you on this one Mahmoud, had it last night. All over the place, funny raw tannins and spirity. Took one sip and put it back into the bottle.Trying it again tonight.

Tasted the 2008 Wynns Cabernet yesterday, and I thought it was back on the money. Pure blackcurrant and mint, medium-full bodied, brambly, chalky but integrated tannins. Solid Good. Definitely worth it for just over 20 dollars per bottle.

Cheers,

Monghead.

Thanks Monghead, perhaps when I get back to Edmonton I might pick up a few bottles of the 2008 if the price is right. I currently have '96, '98, '00, and '05 and seriously wish I had more older vintages.

I tried the lineup on Saturday. Thought the Shiraz was an ordinary follow up to the richer 08. The red stripe was sound, but not very exiting. The 08 Black Label was Very Good, and I think it will age as well, and I will get 6 for the cellar (unlike Monghead though I thought the 07 was fine (but let's not have that discussion again!).

Cheers

Where did you try it? So much for the cellar door stuff being cellar door only. 8)
