TN: 2002 Massena Moonlight Run

Post by Gavin Trott »

2002 Massena the Moonlight Run

The 2001 Moonlight Run is a blend of Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre, and Cinsault aged in neutral French oak. The Cinsault and Mourvedre come from 100-year old vines, the Grenache from 120-year old vines, and the Shiraz from 45-year old vines.

The nose is an enticing mix of black pepper, raspberries, black cherries, cassis, and licorice and spices, just delightful. There's a touch of regional earth as well, very aromatic and enticing. The palate doesn't disappoint either, medium bodied with that typical Massena creamy mouthfeel, this has stacks of rich flavours, ripe, berries and spices, liquorice and more. It has length and style, and would cellar well in the medium term. Lovely stuff, better than 2001, which was very good indeed!

From forum regular Alan rath elsewhere on the forum

2002 Massena Shiraz "11th Hour"
Distinctive from the rest in its very high-toned nose: floral, lavendar, rose garden, perfume/face powder/sweet; dense, ripe, and concentrated, dominated by smoky tar and licorice. Use this 2000-lb Barossa bunker-buster to take out errant dictators, or impacted molars.

Not sure about errant dictators or molars, although the Massena Durif could handle these, but we are definitely talking about the same wine.

Nice notes Alan.

Hello Martin

This is very much in the style of the 2001 and all Massena's. 2002 vintage adds its touch, and the wines are better, but the same style.

If you did not like the 2001, then perhaps not buy the 2002 without trying it?
