The maker is Dr. Loosen, and the vineyard is Erdener Treppchen. It is a very steep vineyard in the Mosel region of Germany (Roman winemaking equipment dating to 300 BC has been excavated here, which puts the age of our vineyards into some perspective) .
Flavours of lime and some slatey mineral overtones, the wine is quite fruity and juicy. It has residual sweeteness but the balancing acid cleans up the finish and brings you back for more. At only 7.5% alcohol it is very quaffable and no headache after !
I had it with flathead tails but it does not require food and could easily be drunk on its own.
Escaped the MidEast for a long weekend of pork and German wine recently.
We preplanned the beautiful town of Bernkastel on the Mosel. Fantastic experience and morning walks up the steep vineyard slopes you mentioned to counter the feasting of the night prior.
Made an appointment with Doctor Loosen. Great hosts and the wines incredibly delicate and complex.
Sounds like a walk to keep you fit - the closest I have come so far is a boat trip down the river, looking at the vines heading up the very steep slopes and thinking about trying to pick them !
