TN: Thoroughbred for the price of a mule

Post by MartinC »

Hi Fellas,

The trick on a big race day is wager on a long-shot to maximise your returns and in this juvenile stallion Stonehorse 02 out of the Kaesler stable you are in for a a big payoff.

Back to the wine:
The aromas came crashing out of the gate. Deep, dark and brooding, this Shiraz is elemental with the best forms of componets have been molded, the mocha and the ripe black fruits of Barossa, powerful tannins and the justically well handled American timber. Despite of weighing in at 15.0+%, it does not feel hot or alcoholic. Big palate with ample body weight it delivered a enomous parade of spellbinding flavours. Highly intense, this big hearted stayer surge towards a long and sustainable grand stand finish.

I've been following this wine since 98 along with 99/00/01 and I daresay this is the best effort from Reid Boswald. It's very close to the O'Bastard'01 in quality with the O.B being more refined but in many way a much better wine than the O.B 2000. Wine for wine, the disparity in pricing ($160 vs. late$20) has got nothing to do with it.. Hearsay, it's easier to select the best barrel to craft a super premium flagship but to make a work-horse-wine for the masses, the entry level for the winery this is a real winner! Like Pana had mentioned earlier, a $60 bucks wine for $30. I would say..."not many $60 bucks can aspired to the heights of Stonehorse 2002" and this is not a big call.

Martin,

I hope you are right, I liked the 01 and just bought some of the 02.

BTW it's Reid BoswaRd who makes the wines.

MC,

I got 6 from Gavin and 6 from candamber in Canberra, don't know if they have any left, I think they only got one case. It's only just hit the distribution chain, bound to be some out there somewhere.
Cheers

Andy,

I bot some O.B. fr Reid b4 but it's a hassle when it came to tax rebates. They need air-way bill etc. Prices r usually fixed even on quantity purchase. Retailers can offer a better deal.

Thanks,
MC

W* have it listed, but $33, $5/btl more than I paid, may not matter so much for export.
Cheers

I have had a love affair with this winery since the 99 Stonehorse and 98 Old Vine. Superb wines, great service, and one of the friendliest cellar doors in the Barossa.
If I have one reservation, is that I have found that the Stonehorse only needs about 3 years to peak.
Having regularly visited my dozen of 99, I have found over the last 6 months, they are beginning to plateau, so I hope that can maintain this peak for a while.
