Friday's Quiz

Post by Quizmaster »

Who, what, etc, etc am I. Full details please ....

I was once (possibly still?) described as:

"Fabulous wine that flags the potential of the district. There are cherry, blackberry and chocolate aromas plus a touch of briar on the nose. The palate is a mix of dark cherry, blackberry and leafy characters, the oak on the finish has a strong cedar quality and there is plenty of fine-grained tannin. It will cellar like a champ and the value is enough to make you feel guilty for a micro-second or more. Grab it while you can! Try it with baked squab."

More clues to follow should you require them.

No, not Barossa Shiraz. I'll even go one step further and let you know, It's not Shiraz or Barossan.

You're 'sorta' on the right track Mark.

Further clues:
Alc/Vol is 13.5%
The wine won a 'best wine of the Year'.

Whoa, hang on, confusion here. On the right track was the State. So, we are talking NSW. So no to YV Pinot, or anything else from Vic for that matter.

It's one of the Barwang wines - the 95 Cabernet, perhaps?

cheers,
Graeme

Can we narrow it down to a pinot?

Also, in my arraogance at thinking I've guessed the wine, I'll also predict that the TN is from the 96-7 Penguin Guide. They're always recommending 'baked squab'!

cheers,
Graeme

Okay so not a pinot and from NSW
I'd guess Orange Cabernet or Cabernet blend
The review implies richness so I'd guess Canobolas Smith Alchemy (usually a Cab Sav Cab Franc blend but sometimes has a bit of shiraz) if not Canobolas Smith then Bloodwood Cabernet it is more leafy than Canobloas Smith. I'd guess the wine will be a 96, 97 or 98 but then I haven't tried any more recent ones but I think it was 00 was ordinary there.
Am I even close? :?

Any chance it's a Mudgee - maybe Poets Corner Black Shiraz - though the hints seem to suggest a cabernet.

If I was being pedantic, I'd say States don't have suburbs per se and Sydney hasn't quite spread that far yet. :P

Most of the 'Canberra region' vineyards and wineries are in NSW tho'.
Cheers

Sorry all, I got dragged out of the cave for a while.

I'm giving it to Graeme.
It was the 1994 Barwang Cabernet. The wine won the Penguin Good Aust Wine Guide 'Best Wine' 1996/97.

Of course the other option was "NSW is that long drive south or south-west from the ACT before you get to a state that produces decent reds." But then I do like some Mudgee and Hilltops reds, so maybe the ACT could annexe those areas, just like Jervis Bay but inland.

Hi Simm

Squab's baby (not fully-fledged) pigeon. Never tried it myself but do remember many, many years ago, having eaten wild pigeons shot by one of my brothers. Can't remember whether it was roasted or stewed but do remember that the breast meat was much darker than chicken, quite fine-textured and a bit gamey.

Back to the quizmaster -

Mudgee Cabernet Franc? :o

Cheers
