ANyone tasted Pewsey Vale 97 Contour?

Bought a couple of bottles of this on the weekend, largely because it is under Stelvin, and is about 3 years older than any other screwcapped wine I owned. I recall Rob Walters' damning criticism of the 97 Clare vintage at a retrospective tasting a few years ago - only the fact Pewsey Vale hails from Eden, and the memory that he wasn't quite so severe on that region swayed me.

Anyone tasted this wine lately, or even at all?

Also, it does have a larger headspace the recent Grosset wines I own. Presumably this is a fill-level issue (or perhaps bottle shape) - there's certainly no evidence of any leakage (both bottles are the same level).

I bought three bottles a few months ago but haven't tasted it myself so also interested if anyone else has.

Havent' noticed any issues with the fill or leaking at all and they've been laid down for about three or four months (despite being stelvins)

Will be opening a couple of bottles at a tasting on the 18th.

FWIW, Jancis R reviewed this wine on her website and thought it to be both outstanding and ridiculously good value for money. It retails for Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â£9.99 a bottle here in the UK.

Hi Graeme,

I tried this wine a few times about six months ago. I'll see if I can dig up a tasting note from the files, but what I can remember is a huge nose with clean fruit throughout the citrus and melon range with a blue-metal substrata that followed on the the palate. The palate length went on and on and on.... Great now, and still youthful enough to get better long into the future.
I'm not a big fan of whites, but I can tolerate riesling, and can admire the Pewsey range in particular. I even thought it sad that they cancelled the Cabernet.

Phil, if you can get it for that price there you should buy up. That would work out to be a similar price that most people would expect to pay for the standard Eden Valley Riesling let alone the Contour Museum '97!

Thanks to all for the information. I actually paid A$26 at a ydney bottle-shop, so 10 quid is a great price! And it's great to hear that it's still travelling well, as they say.

I paid $20 a bottle for mine but it would have been on special and by the dozen, etc. Can't remember where from but I do record what I paid usually.

Hi everyone
I am down to my last of the six pack. It is intense limey fresh riesling and will comfortably last another 5 10 years if well stored.
I would buy more if I could find it.
My 98 arrived today so I am most grateful.

Tried the 98 Pewsey Vale Contours yesterday.
very young pale wine
tight closed nose and the palate has lots of minerals and acid with a hint of apple and limes
needs more time than the 97.
Leave it a couple of years while drinking the 97
very good wine.

Can't agree more about the 98 Pewsey vale Riesling. Had it over the week-end. Absolutely excellent - much tighter and minerally than the reclassified 98 Leonay Eden Valley - for me its midway between the Steingarten and the Leo buring in struture - wil last another decade with ease. Must be one of the best they have made. buy up.

My shop got a measily six pack quota.
and then begged the rep for more who drove to another shop and purveyed anther six pack
and that is it.
I think word is out how good and how fairly priced it is. :cry:

Hi guys

Tried this last night and thought it was archtypal mature(ing) Oz riesling. Lime green/gold in colour. Pronounced nose of lime/grapefruit rind, kerosene and toast. Full palate, again in the lime/grapefruit vein (almost dry botrytis!), touches of toast and honey, buckets of acidity. Drinking well now but methinks it will hold for a good while yet thanks to all that acidity.
