Having had a pretty good experience with the 2000 Shiraz, I found out from my supplier that Dowie Doole is coming out with both a reserve and std shiraz for 2001. Definitely will be getting a few bottles of the reserve to try. Question is... is the std shiraz 2001 any good? Has anyone tried it yet? my supplier has already brought in the std but the reserve is only due early november.
from a price point of view, the std shiraz may be a good buy...
I tried it at Penney's Hill CD alongside a few others. Don't have TNs, but recall not being overly enamoured. The 01 Penney's Hill Shiraz was quite an enjoyable drink however.
Dowie Doole Reserve Shiraz 2001 was first released some time back.
I have had mixed experiences with this wine as follows:
One bottle opened at work, was absolutely spectacular, best tasting experience I have ever had, bar none. There was not a pair of feet in the room touching the floor, everyone was floating, I have never seen wine enthusiast so excited in all my life. And this was tasted along side other excellent Australian Shiraz.
The nose on this wine was alive, the fruit absolutely danced from the glass, fresh sweet perfume of violets, continual WOW's filling the room and disbelief everywhere. The texture was of velvet and silk, the sex appeal of this wine was truly adultery and the long lush finish left the punters craving for more.
Needless to say, the local retailer that this bottle was purchased from was out of stock 2 days after the above tasting.
Although I like/need variety in my wine consumption, I would have gladly cashed in my annual spend of several hundred bottles, for a singular large purchase of the above wine.
Since then, I have tried the 2001 Dowie Doole Reserve Shiraz on two other occasions and experience has been completely different. On both occasion the wine lacked the liveliness and freshness, the fruit seemed ripper, more over cooked, the wonderful aromas were not to be found and the oak was more dominant. Still a good wine, but more Parkerized in nature. Blending/Batching…?????
There are better Shiraz around for $40.
Brings home the old saying, No such thing as a great wine, just great bottles.
