Barossa Visit - Need Suggestions

Post by Rocky »

I will be visiting the Barossa Valley in the coming months and am keen to explore wineries producing wines in a similar style to Standish Wines, which is one of my favorites. I understand the Standish cellar door is not open until next Easter

Can anyone assist or point me in the right direction?

Regards

Hi Rocky,
Yes Standish opens around ANZAC day, very good experience.
Apart from Rockford, which will have a few wines on (no BP unfortunately), I look at small niche producers who make very good value for money reds and punch above their weight in the quality stakes. Eperosa is a fave, (Brett Grocke is such a nice bloke), along with Stonegarden ( owned by Rockford but run by ex winemaker Ben Radford), Max and Me, in Eden Valley, (run by Phil Lehmann), Travis Earth at Greenock, (son of Rockford owner Robert O'Callaghan), Quinn wines, (Andrew Quinn's own show, day job is at Hentley Farm), and Izway out Seppeltsfield way, nice little cellar door and good range of Shiraz.

Others here will mention the more expensive tourist traps

Good luck with it all and have a great trip...spring is a nice time to visit the BV.
Cheers Craig
Tomorrow will be a good day

I would recommend:

Kaesler
Turkey Flat
Laughing Jack
Langmeil
Izway (I have not been but hearing good recommendations)

No idea if Eisenstone has a cellar door, but they’re in a somewhat similar vein to Standish, in my humble opinion. Been a few years since I was in the Barossa. Rockford definitely worth a visit.

Cheers, Ed

definitely hook up with Travis at Travis Earth . did a great tasting there once. great vino.
Riesling Freak new cellar door is very close to Rockfords. give that a go.st hallets rd just across the way.
Not sure if you're a member but a taste with Fraser McKinley @Sami odi is awesome if you can set it up. He's a super fella.
Also A taste at Cirillo wines w Marco Cirillo maybe?. I tried once but couldn't coordinate it with what I was doing and he was busy but open to a tasting appt.
Concur with all of Craig's suggestions. all excellent recommendations IMO.

Many thanks all

Have booked a tasting at Rockford and will investigate the others. I prefer the smaller under the radar boutique wineries who focus on quality and customer relationships.

Regards

If you like the smaller more boutique places then:
Eperosa - Brett is such a nice fella and his wines are excellent
Cirillo - Marco is a great fella too and the Old Vine Grenache is made from the oldest Grenache vines in the world.
Ballycroft - Joe is one of the real characters of the Barossa Valley and if there is a more passionate bloke about wine, I haven't met them. Awesome tasting if you like a slightly bigger style.
Tomfoolery - really good array of wines and Chippy has every base covered.
Vanguardist - Michael is a great fella and wines are just plain outstanding.
RieslingFreak - a great alternative when you are sick of all the reds. Great tastings.
So many great cellar doors in the Barossa and lots of smaller ones are appointment only.
If you are eating there, Fermentasian and Vintners are must do's.
If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?

Rockford is the least under the radar, and one of the biggest tourist trap in the region (?)

Try Hart of the Barossa for a true under the radar experience.

Yes Matt, could be classed as tourist trap...but at least you don't need to spend several hundred or more on a bottle of Shiraz
