April 2026 purchases

Post by sjw_11 »

Kicking off a new thread...

Just got pushed a Laithwaites offer on "emergency" Aussie wine deals: "It’s a perfect storm of Chinese tariffs and exports to the US being at their lowest point in two decades. Aussie cellars are overflowing with unsold stock."

I am familiar with Schild Estate and Pirramimma (and the crazy RRPs of the modern Ch Yaldara) ... not really familiar with Cape Barren, Martins Vineyard or Ulithorne, although they all seem to be part of something called CW Wines?

The RRPs here all claim to be c$150-180, about which I have a doubt if anyone has ever actually paid that, but on offer with a further 20% off these came out at c£15 or $30/bottle which seemed a fair enough discount to give them a shot.

2x Chateau Yaldara 1847 Grand Pappy's Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021
2x Cape Barren Rare Bird McLaren Vale Shiraz 2020
2x Martins Vineyard McLaren Vale Shiraz 2021
2x Schild Estate Three Springs Single Vineyard Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021
2x Ulithorne Singularis McLaren Vale Shiraz 2021
2x Pirramimma Hartfell McLaren Vale Shiraz 2022

Those names are new to me as well, but the CW wines site gives some info, including them being based out of the old Stonehaven winery. As you say, $30 / £15 a bottle seems fair for a punt if you enjoy MV/BV shiraz.

CW Wines were on a buying spree and have an ocean of wine under these brands and more. They are seen on heavy discounters' web sites at prices you mention. Good wines buy not at the RRP. I've bought a few.

I thought I would give today’s Giaconda bunrush a go, buying for a small consortium but after last years miss I wasn’t hopeful. Website failed to load, then order page wouldn’t take my bottle volume, then it wouldn’t accept Mastercard details. Then re entered everything again and the screen wouldn’t load, so l walked away. I honestly didn’t care that much. Well blow me down, two hours later I got an email from Giaconda confirming my order!

Website says the Giaconda Chardonnay is sold out already, also the Pinot Noir & Roussanne.
Lists their stockists in each state, which might be helpful.

Did exactly the same. Gave up after a few minutes of trying and then about lunchtime got an email. I prefer Art Series anyway, but I’ll put the Giaconda at the back of the cellar and forget about them for 10 - 15 years

Last years allocation sold out in less than 6 minutes - might explain problems.

Yeah their website got overwhelmed . Very frustrating for many . I’m happy to let it pass at 160pb.

Scored a 2020 gran enemigo chacayes Cabernet franc from vinomofo for $30

They have 22 meshach for sale right now at 65pb in a 6er if anyone is keen. Good deal

I think it is tough times for wineries, especially those with higher pricing. Their pain, our gain, but their pain doesn't sit right with me.

Well yeah there are soo many discounted offers going for soo many good wines. It makes it a bit of a hard sell to buy anything on release outside of the cult wines that always sell out, as you’ll likely get in for cheaper down the track.

It also makes me think is a repricing of the market in order if all of these wines aren’t selling

But I also have less sympathy for over priced wineries. I remember someone on here recently posted a treasury wines shareholders meeting minutes where they said their premium wines were being sold on a 40% ebitda margin , so they obviously have room to discount. I know TWE has recently ran into trouble also but still

And meshach for 250 retail, is that a reasonable price? I don’t know

I grabbed a 3-pack of it (2019) for a similar price a few months back. My tasting note (somewhat short and unhelpful):
Dark fruit, varnish, silky smooth mouth feel, length, tannin. A well put together wine that will go the distance.

A mail-list mixed 6-pack from Pressing Matters in Tas. Fizz, cab blend, pinot, 3 rizzers (new/old/off-dry). Value's OK at $270, but they try to sell the BdB fizz for $80 at CD, which is pushing it a bit. Anyway, the combined pack value isn't too bad.
