National Storage Hindmarsh Closing
National Storage Hindmarsh Closing
National Storage is closing its Hindmarsh storage facility, including wine storage on 1 March.
Phillisc and I both have wine there and are having a few issues dealing with NS over this.
Anyone else in the same boat?

Re: National Storage Hindmarsh Closing
Sorry, I confused National Storage with Kennards. National is on the other side of the Torrens.
With the premium housing development next door I can understand that this would now be a premium bit of land and at the right price to bulldoze and build.

Drink the wine, not the label.

C2...no the plan is to waste money and NS want to turn Hindmarsh into a marquee facility... perhaps along the lines of what happened with the e Pentridge development in Melbourne.
I've been with them for 25 years and like all things customer service has gone down hill and price esulates unabated.
The Southwark West End Brewery is across the Torrens River and yes 14 storey highrise (under a flight path) plus a 1000 homes are planned. I hope it is a thoughtful development...not another cardboard and spit dog box estate.
The move to Klemzig...when they inform us what is actually happening will be very challenging. I'll be sounding out a number of helpers.
Cheers Craig

Yes there will be pressure on the Kennards site. The old Sands and McDougall factory, Coca Cola and others are all being redeveloped. Port Rd will probably be another St Kilda Rd in the future.

The Southwark Brewery is closing? Where will they be making the best stout in the world - Southwark Old Stout?

Long closed Chuck...it's completely demolished. Southwark and West End are now made at Lion Nathan in Melbourne

Have you considered The Tunnels wine storage at Panorama? 2 disused railway tunnels - One is about 200m long and the other about 400m long. The 200m tunnel is yet to be filled. Cool and dark but not perfect cellaring temperature. I stored wine there after we moved to Sydney in 2020. Ridiculously cheap; about $12 per month for an entire pallet in 2020. There is no insurance but as you walk down the tunnel to your wine you go past oceans of pallets of stunning wines with client names like Penfolds and other famous SA wine families. Thieves, if they were dead keen, would target these well before getting to your wines. The massive doors are locked for added security. The guy running it lives there with family and a few big dogs. Real knock around guy in stubbies and t-shirt and forklift. Dave is his name I think. It's worth an inspection just to see the amazing operation. Website is https://www.thetunnels.com.au/

Yes have looked at this... about 4 km from where I live. Yes the rates have gone up and apparently you are allowed just two visits a year. As a short term option it may come under consideration.

Wickman’s still has logistics at the facility. One of their cellars next to mine. Not sure how it works but I stopped buying from them, as I’m not paying freight charges when I’m separated by only a few mm of colorbond.

Yes, have considered The Tunnels, but trying to stick with active climate controlChuck wrote: ↑Sun Jan 18, 2026 11:58 am Have you considered The Tunnels wine storage at Panorama? 2 disused railway tunnels - One is about 200m long and the other about 400m long. That's ridiculous...one of the reasons why I use Oddbins. They're very happy for me to collect. No charge.JamieAdelaide wrote: ↑Sun Jan 18, 2026 3:29 pmWickman’s still has logistics at the facility. Moved my relatively modest collection of 15-20 cases over to Klemzig on the Weekend. Managed to secure a spot when they informed everyone late last year.
A friend has a much larger collection/unit there and has struggled to secure similar sized storage at an alternate location. Has currently locked in a smaller unit at Kennards up the road but is looking for further storage for the remainder.

Just out of interest I contacted the tunnels yesterday and Dave emailed back today that he currently doesn't have sufficient space for what I would need to store.mjs wrote: ↑Sun Jan 18, 2026 4:38 pmYes, have considered The Tunnels, but trying to stick with active climate controlChuck wrote: ↑Sun Jan 18, 2026 11:58 am Have you considered The Tunnels wine storage at Panorama? 2 disused railway tunnels - One is about 200m long and the other about 400m long. Meanwhile it's going to be very tight meeting the unrealistic deadlines currently imposed by NS

When collecting the last of my stash a few years ago he had only filled about half of the 200m tunnel with the 400m tunnel empty (or at least I assumed it was empty). Maybe wines from the current glut may have been stashed there.

Plenty of lockers available at Kennards in Thebarton.

What are the going rates at Kennards?

Re: National Storage Hindmarsh Closing
Craig,
I had maybe 24 doz there before consolidating the Melbourne Kennards cellar with Thebarton's all at NS Hindmarsh. The NS rates were far more competitive, that's why I went there. Looking at what Thebarton have atm, I could be paying almost double what I was paying at Hindmarsh. They do have some space though
cheers, Malcolm
