The ultimate Cork-screw?

Reading the ullage thread got me thinking.
Has anybody tried /experimented with combining an inner cork layer/ cork nugget etc with a common screw capsule for sealing.
This obviously gives the benefit of cork and its aging & developing qualities with the sound closure of screwcap.
More cost...yes...over the top maybe?
It may have already been tried.

But wouldn't this still lead to the problem of TCA/cork taint?

In fact, this will also open door to screw-cap failure- when the capsule gets dented, and the seal violated.

Yes, I can't see any advantage in this. The screwcap would prevent any air getting in at all (defeating any possible advantage of cork being minutely permeable - which is debatable anyway), but the cork would still potentially ruin the wine. Worst of both worlds?

It has been tried for a few ports in the 70's. Have also see a similar setup on beer bottles e.g. Abbeys de Roc. Seems the worst of both worlds as the corkistes will say it has reductive issues as the seal is less permeable and the screwcapistes will say that TCA remains of concern.

This is an issue today with current Stelvin seals anyway. I'm glad I noticed when I knocked a bottle as I did it. Opened it up and noticed that the foil had been broken and the plastic behind it was getting wet.

Late 70's/early 80's Pewsey Vale Riesling. No idea what they were thinking....
Corked wines under screwcap, but the good bottles were great!!

Sounds like the worst of both worlds to me. The aging aspects of cork are at least partly due to letting in a small amount of oxygen. If you put a screwcap over the cork you prevent most of that that and introduce the possibility of off-flavours and TCA taint.
