What you you guys buy if your budget was only $500 for the rest of the year?
There are many others, but I only know about these wine because of the reviews I have read, so the choices are quite limited.
Any input is welcome

To drink now or to cellar, do you have preferred styles or regions?

Hmmm, I know it's all hypothetical, but if my budget for the rest of the year was only $500 I would be lowering my sights a little.
Half a dozen 2004 Zema Cabernet Sauvignon at around $20
Half a dozen 2005 Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon at around $28
Half a dozen 2006 Mountadam Shiraz at around $16
All great drinking now, but will drink well over 6-10 years.
Should leave enough for a bottle of 04 St Henri, and maybe a 389 to toast your smart buying!
Cheers,
LL

At $500 for the rest of the year and 1-2 bottles drinking a week I would be looking at the $15 red thread!
cheers

None of the above, I already have 6 Tally 2004.
Like the others, if $500 is all I could spend for the next 6+ months, I'd buy around the $20pb mark.

Inconceivable
We drink 1 bottle of red per night minimum. 6 months at that rate would require around 200 bottles. Impossible to source wine I would put inside my mouth (in Australia) at $2.50 a bottle, and I have no intention of cutting down just to meet a budget.

Is your cellar empty already?
Actually, $500 is what I need to spend for the rest of the year so I can drink the stuff in the cellar that needs drinking.

No.
We could possibly survive a 10 year drought

Based on your list, the Tally is a no-brainer. IMO, close to, if not already, the best Cab in Australia after Moss Wood.

I voted for The Tally but if it was me and I was confined to those selections it would be:
4 Balnaves
1 x 707
or,
3 Balnaves
1 x 707
and 2 bottles of 389 or 1 of St Henri to make up the $500 (continuing the Penfolds theme)

I second that.

I cant think of a lot of World class Red wines for <$80 (especially Cabs) like the 2004 Tally (JO's statement about how it should be mandotory tasting for all Aus winemakers is very true) so I would choose that although I love 707 too and purchase this even usually a bottle or 2...As for Grange I didnt purchase the 02 but I think the 04 will be a certain purchase if its as good as I hear... So I vote Tally in a Photo over 707!!
