Well my day was bad....but now worse...stumbled across a bottle of 1976 Hill of Grace in our family cellar that my father bought a million years ago...and what do you know...stuffed...cork has leaked and mega ullage (below the shoulder)

Dammit so close to a brilliant wine today :(

Anyway for interest sake what was this wine like??

I'm sure I have a standard response to this sort of thing, something about the need for good records and ongoing cellar management, but I can't seem to find it now.

The younger generation is supposed to look after the older one when they start to forget things.

I think what Red Bigot is trying to say, without having to type the keys.. hehe

is - OH MY GOD, that shouldn't have happened. All such future wastes can be avoided by just keeping a list of what you have, start the list today!

I think that's what he'd say, anyway.. it certainly is what I'd say.

Anyway, the 76 which I opened the last of my bottles four years ago and sat them alongisde grange of similar years, well.. it was pretty okay. We experienced slight cork taint in one bottle, so fair enough.. but the second was pretty good.

Henscke's more recent vintages will not show as well in the years to come, in my opinion, so if you do by newer vintages, select carefully and don't bother cellaring for as long as you did with the 76!

Yep cellar management is deffinatley something I am trying to get in order....thus coming across this stray bottle. Problem is there is so much there finding the time to do it all is hard.

But have to start some where. We have program called "Wine XT" on our computer which helps out. But got to get in the habit of using it.

I worked with a bloke who forgot he had some wines saved at his mums place. Knew I was into wine so brought one of his dozen DArrys from the mid seventies.
Weel preserved fully developed and only lightly bricked. It was techinically past the window but was still a magnificently developed wine.

I said to drink or sell it dont leave it there.

What do you think he did?

you just cant tell some people./
