Dear Quizters, a pictorial quiz today:

Image

This historic picture is very much wine related.

Two out of the three identities in the picture are some of the most famous names in Australian wine. Who are they, and what other famous Australian wine name are they associated with?

For a bonus point; where was the picture taken?

lots of love

I don't know about the other two but the guy on the right is TORB.

What, no-one willing to take a stab?

OK here's a clue:

It's the names that are notable here, not necessarily the people themselves.

The names are also well known on the international stage.

Is the person on the right Edward Tyrrell and photo taken at
Tyrrells?
Ron.

No, not Tyrrels.

Another clue, the guy on the right is best known by his nickname, and another picture of him is also very well known.

In fact probably better known to the mainstream population of drinkers than to the Auswine community.

No, not Wynns.

Another clue

Both of these guys were neither owners, nor founders, of the winery associated with them.

Ha, lost without your Google, aren't you :P

Let's recap the clues:

- The photo comes from South Australia, but more detail is required for the bonus point.
- The two people weren't owners or founders of the winery.
- The guy on the right is better known by his nickname
- Their names, and another photo of the guy on the right, are probably better known to the mainstream population of drinkers than to the Auswine community

Oh, and something about cupping his deaf ear....hmmm...I'm sure I've seen a reference to this somewhere...

Yes!

Whiskers Blake. His name is given to Whiskers Blake Port, his picture is also on the bottle.

Now, who is the other guy?

Another clue, while his name is associated with wine, you'd think it was named after a place that was named after him.

Ok, Hardy's Whiskers Blake port. Whiskers Blake and his dog were responsible for scaring the birds away from the grapes. His picture is on the current bottles of WB port.

I presume the other person is Thomas Hardy, who arrived in Australia in 1850 ?

Photo taken at the Tintara winery ?

Closing in PLCB but remember the clues:

- The two people weren't owners or founders of the winery

But you do get the Bonus point; my reference has the picture taken at McLaren Vale, so Tintara is probably thereabouts.

BTW PLCB,

I'll also give you the score for giving Hardy as the third name I was after. Both these gentleman were associated with Hardy's wines in the century before last.

Still looking for the surname of the guy on the left.

Hmm, let's see

Jacob Creek?
Val E. McLaren?

I don't drink port with whiskers, how am I supposed to know these things?

cheers :D

Actually Whiskers Blake port used to be fantastic value for money, but the blend seem to have gone off a bit it recent times.

Eileen Tintara?
Jacob Creek?
Val E. McLaren?

Notta single one correct.

Well done Babe

She hasn't got the musk stick yet, there's still the guy on the left, and I've given enough hints already.

Hmmm....was it Tom Nottage ? Of future Nottage Hill fame ?

YES!!!

The Babe gets the Cupie doll.

I thought that 'notta single one correct' would be a dead giveaway given the marketing campaign a year or two back.

Tom Nottage managed the McLaren Vale cellars and vineyards of Hardy's for more than 60 years. His name lives on the the mass market wine Nottage Hill, which is produced in immense quantities and shipped around the world.

Whiskers Blake was one of the characters in the vineyard and was a gamekeeper. Whiskers Blake port was named after him. (I thought the Whiskers nickname would have been obvious)

Both names are clearly associated with the Hardy's name.

The photo of Tom Nottage admonishing Whiskers Blake in the McLaren Vale vineyard is part of the collection at Hardy's Head Office.

This particular photo was published in "Choosing and Enjoying Australian Wine" by Robert Mayne, published 1989 by Reed Books.

I'm going back into my dingy cell now. No need to thank me, I wouldn't know how to handle it anyway

Damn it, I *knew* it was in that book ! I've spent ages today looking for it, but couldn't find it. In the end, I had to resort to ...ahem...other forms of research...

Cheers, Celia

PS. Keep up the non-Google quizes, QA, it gives the rest of us a chance !

Cough! Splutter! Choke!
Oh yes, fine. And how's it going to look when I lug 40kg of wine research books into the office every Friday, eh?

I mean, here's me, taking on high moral ground (ah, its lonely on the non-Google road), dredging through the sediment of expired synapses scattered throughout my cranium ina futile quest for answetrs, all the while others are scanning at leisure the entire published history of Australian wine. Harrumph!

I'm just relying on inspired guesses to wine these things.

Of, course, it keeps my brain agile for work - that's what I'll tell the IT department.

Maybe my moral ground's not so high after all....

Avagoodweegend, everyone,

cheers,
Graeme
