Hello

Based on member feedback I recently put the tasting note forum and this one together.

I wondered how people are finding this?

It seems to me, anecdotally only, that we are now getting far fewer tasting notes posted.

Your thoughts?

Gavin,

I must admit that the separation for those two topics alone make more sense to me.

I have a different mindset when I am reading the general forum than when I am reviewing tasting notes. While I enjoy both, I tend to view one with more seriousness than the other.

getting fewer? TORB's weekly post got 3+ pages or so of TNs and impressions.
I don't see that the formal TNs were consistently all that better on this or the old forum.

You could be right, just my impression perhaps.

Maybe its that I'd like to see more tasting notes?

Is it just that there are fewer posts overall ?

Now that you asked Gavin, I am a FIRM supporter of a SEPARATE tasting notes sector as things seemed more organised that way. The idea with vintage first then description, was a great one and would shine in a tasting notes section.
These are my thoughts.

Hi babe,

I reckon you'd be right on this one. The new format, albeit light years ahead of the old site, doesn't suit the the free flow of threads we used to get - the one liners etc. This is not a criticism, just a matter of fact.

Gavin,

As to whether combining All About Wine and Tasting Notes was a good idea? I think so. It's easier to view all the topics in one hit and generates greater cross-fertilisation of ideas/threads, in my book. Given the new site's been running for not very long, traffic will build in time as more and more people come on board. If only more would interact, rather than lurk, is probably the only issue that bothers me slightly. I didn't realise how many shy people are out there. Each to his own, as it should be.

The altered format, needing to log in, and not being able to readily see the thread all point to a lesser input. It now requires marginally more committment to actually post a comment and this works against many of the peripheral posters. (If you took out the top six or seven posters on the other Oz forum for example, the number of posts would be relatively small).

Chris

No. of boards is less significant to me as a result of the "view posts since last visit" option, which I find really useful.

I am a fan of having both 'all about wine' and 'tasting notes' together. It just makes it easier and less time consuming to view and post.

cheers

I think that the current format (one combined forum) is my preferred option, as lumping everything together is easier to read, follow, and promotes a greater flow of discussion.

Sorry to be a bit contrary, but I like having a separate section for tasting notes. As others have mentioned, I read them from the perspective of looking for things that I would like to try, rather than from the perspective of the more general aspects of wine.

I recognize that this creates a bit of an issue for TORB's weekly request, but it could go in either place. As long as people know where  .

I like having separate forums for notes-vs-discussion. It's only an extra click or two and it's easier to see when there are new notes.

I LOVE the current format. I do not have the bandwidth to go back and forward between 2 forums.

Hello

This mini poll (sort of) shows the dilemma, whatever way I go some agree, some disagree, so we'll keep it this way for now.

But as a community, we can change in the future should most of us wish it.
