A Burgundy dinner - 4 July 2026

G’day
I was lucky enough to Burgundy dinner hosted by a good friend (who happens to be a Burgundy fanatic). 10 of us occupied the private dining room at Mayfair Lane in West Perth. Mayfair Lane provided a four-course menu to accompany the wines.
12 wines were presented, in 4 flights of three. Each flight focussed on one facet of Burgundy. My brief notes are below:
Flight 1 - Chablis
2023 Jean Defaix Les Lys 1er Cru: 100% stainless steel – no oak at all. Medium yellow in colour. Lemon, quince, nectarine and green apple on the nose, with some minerality. The palate is round and generous, with just enough acid, and some wet stone. Moderate length.
2015 Vincent Dauvissat La Forest 1er Cru: Yellow colour tending to gold. The nose shows a combination of primary and developed fruits – largely peach and nectarine. There’s some salinity as well. The palate is substantial, with more stone fruits, wet river stones and minerals. Acid is gentle, and the wine is quite full bodied with a long finish. My favourite of this bracket, and the group concurred.
2020 Domaine Francois Raveneau Chablis: Deep yellow colour. Stone fruits (peaches and nectarines) sit alongside savoury notes and some salinity. The palate is more citrus than stone fruits, with salted lemon, more savoury notes. The wine is more linear than the Dauvissat, with high acid and good length. Both wines see old oak only.
Flight 2 - Meursault and the wider Côte de Beaune
2023 Jean-Marc Vincent Bourgogne Blanc: Light yellow colour. A nutty nose with peach and nectarine. The palate is savoury and nutty and this slightly overpowers the stone fruits. Moderate acid and medium length,
2021 Domaine Pierre Morey Meursault Les Terres Blanches: Medium yellow colour. The nose shows lemon / citrus with some nectarine and salinity. The palate shows (almost tart) lemon, with more salinity. The fruit purity is noticeable, with oak very much in the background. The wine is austere, with medium acid, length and palate weight.
2016 Bouchard Pere & Fils Les Perrieres 1er Cru: Medium yellow. Lots of ripe stone fruits (peaches, nectarine, even quince and one taster noted pineapple). This was the most complex of the three wines, with a creamy texture and loads of flavour. A long finish, full mouthfeel and fully in balance. This was voted white wine of the night.
Flight 3 - Vosne Romanee with a sneaky Nuits Saint Georges/VR border vineyard
2015 Alain Hudelot-Noellat Vosne-Romanee: Ruby colour. There’s an intensity to this wine. Red and dark cherry fruits, with a touch of mushroom and some spice notes. A juicy palate, with red fruits, modestly grippy fine tannins, good acid and a long finish. Excellent structure with a delightful tension between the fruit, acid and tannins, and well balanced
2015 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Les Boudots 1er Cru: Corked ☹
2018 Domaine Daniel Rion & Fils Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru: Pale ruby colour. A fragrant nose, with cherries, strawberry and red currant. Gentle fruits a little spice, and no fungal notes. Juicy palate, with soft red fruits – quite clean with little to no savoury or earthy notes. Modest tannins (despite 50% new oak), clean acid and good structure. Leaner than the other wines and medium length. Voted red wine of the night by the group.
Flight 4 - Nuits proper
2016 Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot Nuits-Saint-Georges: Deep ruby colour. The nose shows dark cherries, some earth and mushrooms, a touch of VA, and faint milk chocolate. The palate has some tertiary elements, with developed cherry and savoury notes, and mocha / coffee. Acid is noticeable and perhaps the fruit is starting to fade. The wine has a thick, almost inky texture (well, for a pinot).
2017 Domaine Henri Gouges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru: Ruby colour A fresh nose, with ripe red cherries. There’s more bright red fruits on the palate, with gentle and modest fine tannins, clean acid and moderate length. Elegant.
2020 Domaine Robert Chevillon Les Roncieres 1er Cru: Unfortunately this was cork tainted enough to mask the nose. The palate, however, showed fresh blueberry, soft acid and gentle tannins. This would have been possibly excellent if not slightly stripped from the TCA.
Finish
2023 Daniel Bouland Chiroubles (magnum): Pale ruby colour. Fresh cherry and strawberry fruit. Slightly stalky, and a little chocolate. The palate shows fresh under-ripe strawberries and cherries. It’s also showing some stalkiness, with modest and soft tannins, juicy acidity and a medium finish.
The Results
Each of the four flights was voted on, for wine of the flight:
Chablis: 2015 Vincent Dauvissat La Forest 1er Cru
Meursault / Cote de Beaune: 2016 Bouchard Pere & Fils Les Perrieres 1er Cru
Vosne Romanee: 2018 Domaine Daniel Rion & Fils Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru
Nuits St Georges: 2016 Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot
Wine of the night: 2016 Bouchard Pere & Fils Les Perrieres 1er Cru
My compliments to our host for the evening – not just for the wines, but for his infectious enthusiasm and knowledge. Also to Mayfair Lane, for their cuisine and service.
Cheers
Allan
