Four enjoyable days in Clare last weekend.
Good to be back after a 15 year hiatus.
Visited a number of wineries and 2024 and 2024 Rieslings consistently showed well.
Good Catholic Girl was the standout. Absolutely raucous experience with about 20 very merry people in a CD on a cold wet Saturday afternoon, with a great host. Julie Barry, daughter of the late Jim Barry, was given a vineyard that was planted in 1997 with cuttings from the Amargh Block.
2018 James Brazill Shiraz is a magnificent wine, at $70 its one 1/5 the price of Amargh and i'd wager equally as good. Picked up a few.
2024 Teresa Riesling also very good
Long lunch at Slate at Pikes was excellent, followed by an extensive tasting. Mixed dozen of the Hill Block Cabernet, EWP Shiraz and off dry Riesling.
New premium Cabernet, 2021 Vanguard, from just two barrels. Very good wine...might get some.
Few bottles of 2018 Riley's dry land Shiraz, after an excellent pub lunch at Mintaro, Magpie and Stump. Both the pub and Riley's restaurant were completely booked out.
Tasting flight at Pauletts, excellent wines and food, but unfortunately crap service.
A few bottles of 2024 Mount Horrocks Riesling.

Nice time at Ulster park wines in Auburn, a six pack of the Shiraz, followed by a three hour gin tasting and pizza'a at the Three little birds distillery next door. Great set up and fancy CD and function space in the works. Wanted to do a cheeky run down to KT, but unfortunately too much gin, too little time.
Sevenhill Cellars, before we looked at anything was advised to go out the back...and glad we did , mammoth warehouse sale. I appreciate wineries are doing it tough, but this is how you clear stock, 2024 Inigo Riesling and Shiraz, tawny port, 2022 Brave Journey Cabernet Malbec ( $5 a bottle!!), so four dozen later, plus a few Tokay's or Topaque as now called. Excellent tasting of the whole range of wines afterwards.
Crabtree and under new ownership, seems to be going very well, Andrew Kenny is the wine maker. Mixed dozen of 2023/24 Rieslings, some 2021 Shiraz and three Muscat. Excellent wines and great CD.
A few other visits that I have forgotten, plus a few good meals at local pubs/restaurants.
Inevitable but contrasting information/conversation on the Brady's...whispers of an imminent sale countered by "they're not going anywhere".

6 2022 Wynns Childs single vineyard cabernet.

Attended a Wynns new release dinner Wednesday, and left feeling very ordinary with a screaming headache...possibly too much Chardy, which I normally never drink

2023 BL Cabernet showed well.
2022 JR and Childs were the wines of the night for me. Both wonderful expressions of Coonawarra Cabernet, the JR will be very good.
2024 single vineyard Cabernet Franc was interesting, very light style, minimal oak influence...matured in old 3000 litre casks, not bad.
2022 Michael Shiraz, a good wine, but middle palate is missing, not something I have previously encountered. Explanation was that it needs time to settle, and yes that could be true. However, simply not a patch on the outstanding 2021 version.

Always buy wine and am too embarrassed list it all here. Surely an addiction?

Anyways I will mention Chateau Beaucastel 2017 for $95 at Sydney Duty Free. If inbound you must pre-order. This is cheaper than Europe. I tried one. All good. Not dumped for any insidious reasons like bad transport.

12 x Wynns Black Label Messenger Chardonnay

Was at the same Wynns dinner as phillisc, he did seem to make an early exit Dinner was at Soi38, a well known Thai joint in Adelaide and the food and wine pairing seemed to work really well, food was excellent

22 JR was the standout for me, closely followed by the 2022 Childs. Pedro Ximenez was excellent to finish
