After sadly moving back to Sydney from Adelaide we want to discover the regional wine areas. So we are heading to Mudgee for a couple of days and need advice on wineries worth a visit. Also what grape varieties are they good at?

Cheers

Carl

The silence is deafening. Finally got there but forced straight back to Sydney with a death in the family. Not unexpected so all good. Research was limited but hero grapes are cabernet, merlot, pinot and chardonnay. Like the Hunter there's also a focus on fortifieds which you don't see in other regions. Will get back there on an extended trip that will include the Orange area which is developing a reputation for cool climate wines.

Sorry I missed this Chuck, and condolences on the death in the family.

I visited Mudgee back in the spring of 2001 so anything I have to say should be taken with more than a grain of salt. The winery that most impressed me was Huntington Estate and their bin number wines. I understand that they are under new ownership so things may have changed. At the time the wineries appeared to be fledgling and still trying to get on their feet. There were several disappointments and some promising wineries but for me to say anything about them wouldn't be fair as I'm sure they would have improved in the intervening years because they appeared to me serious and dedicated.

Cheers ..................... Mahmoud.
