1959 Moulin Touchais (Anjou)
This had started to leak so it was time to crack it open (not that I needed a reason). Light gold with no brown tinkerings. Great luminosity and clarity. Bouquet of evolving honey, marmalade and apricot. Perfect without being over bearing. The palate? Intoxicating! Amazing concentration and intensity. Beautifully proportioned and balanced. A stupendous 45-second finish. The initial taste was of sweetness, then a sudden and persistent surge of essence – layer upon layer. Then a zing of acidity to clean the palate and draw it back into line. Anything but cloying or flabby. Close to sheer perfection. True nectar. Years to go. Lighter than the recent 68 Aszu-Essencia but an equally stunning and resplendent wine. I’m having a great run with dessert wines this year – still to come some great German BAs! Dessert wines remain so under-rated, especially their evolutionary prowess in great vintages.
