PART 1 - Auswine Blind Tastings (April 30)

Again, another thank you to Gavin and Robin for putting on a very pleasant evening of wine tastings, BBQ and giving us the opportunity to meet new people.
Wine 1
There was something about the nose on this one that I didn't like, a bit too sweet (residual sugar?), very plummy and a bit ripe. Menthol and black olive on the palate, short length and finishing slightly stalky. All in all a nice pizza wine. 2002 Hartz Barn Mailbox Merlot.
Wine 2
A dusty purple color, with a lovely nose of sweet plum, cherry and rasberry. The palate was quite dissapointing and I thought the length dropped off rather sharply and was a bit disjointed. Rufus Stone 2002 McLaren Vale Cab/Malbec.
Wine 3
A dark opaque purple color with a nose of milk chocolate and a little apricot. A nice entry of chocolate, plums and berries although the body was a bit narrow. Drying tannins, proibably a drink now wine. 2002 Summerfield Traditonal Cab/Merlot.
Wine 4
A dusty nose of Plum and cherries. A rich, silky palate of tar and black fruits, generous length and good structure. A bit of a suprise, it was revealed as one of Roger Pike's wines; a Mauris 2002 McLaren Vale shiraz, which has apparently been awarded 5 stars in the next release of WineState magazine. A pity only a limited quantity was made.
Wine 5
Deep purple color with a sweet, perfumed nose; cherries and a little hay ?? Layers of ripe berries and chocolate. Medium bodied, good structure and generous alcohol. Te-Aro Estate Harolds creek shiraz 2002.
