For me, enjoying a Clonakilla offering at present

2008 Clonakilla Jack O'Reilly Shiraz Viognier- Almost Very Good. Better than the 2007 O'Riada offerred up by Clonakilla at present I think. More depth and intensity. And cheaper too...

The Story Westgate Vineyard Shiraz 2006. Nice, lively acid, a bit meaty, savoury cherry fruit, salty/sour plums, very good line across the palate and persistence. A quite distinctive wine, fair value @ $40.

I liked his regular Shiraz and I have a couple of these. I had high hopes that they would be better than "fair", and was giving them some time.

Sounds like an excuse to crack one and "check" .

This is one of the wines that VC get icon wine makers to make especially for them. Like the rk shiraz and chardy. I think it is close to $25 per bottle, especially with their 30% off at present.

A soothing Fish and chips last night after a trip to Ikea. Had 2006 Yarra Burn Pinot Chardonnay Sparkling Was a good wine. Little complexity but decent mousse and quite fruity yet cool climate.

Also looked at the remains of a Ulithorne Flamma Sparkling Shiraz NV Either this has moved onto a new disgorgement since the initial release of the NV or something strange has happened. The initial release was bretty in both bottles that I had tried last year but this bottle that I purchased a few weeks ago is clean. Savoury plums and a little young with purple bubbles galore. Under crown which I like and should take some short term cellaring to boot. Had a quick Google and it looks like WineFront also noticed the turnaround. Good to Very Good wine and worth another look.

Grant Burge Filsell Shiraz 2004
Drinking very well: all Barossa... velvety, cigarry and schmick. Touch of meatiness on the mid-palate.
Paired well with char-grilled steaks.

2005 Tyrell's Brokenback Shiraz- structured with juicy acid, the Hunter stamp is still unmistakable. Very spicy too, in the best of ways. Red fruit with earth and leather there in the backseat. At $17 it's all good news. Linear expression of Hunter shiraz. Enjoy with fatty meats I reckon.

I've just one bottle left Michael and I'll be leaving it for some years yet - it has the structure to easily go 10yr+ so I wouldn't rush to open one of yours unless you just want to try the wine. It's very good. My "fair value" comment was perhaps a bit harsh.

2001 Wynns Cabernet Sauvignon- Good. Quite angular on release (from memory), but filling out nicely now.

Firstly wow, very pretty and very cool new site. Congrats Gavin et al!

Some wines from Tyson Stelzer's Barossa Wine Traveller book launch in Brisbane-

2008 Yalumba The Virgilius Viognier- There is a lot of restraint in this release, but it's still an exotic & opulent experience. Pears, apricot, honey, spice, a touch of musk and a full mid palate and mouthfeel. But the acidity holds the flamboyance in check. A bit of funk adds complexity and gosh it's long. Superb, my favourite release of this wine to date.

2004 Peter Lehmann Wigan Riesling- A hint of kero wafts away to leave the lemon and toast prevailing. I got a touch of unexpected spice too. Maybe that was just me. Most pleasing.

2004 Peter Lehmann Margaret Semillon- Waxy , lemony, dry but with good fruit weight and toasty notes all roaring to go.

2006 Teusner Moppa Mataro- Wine of the night for me. Meaty, cherried, spicy, earthen, primordial and stunning. Fantastic fruit handled superbly

2006 Rockford Basket Press- I'd somehow imagined something different/bigger/more from this Icon Shiraz. A deep array of fruits, liquorice, nuts and vanilla. An X factor and the structure seemed great. Anyway, it was my first Rockford Basket Press and I did really enjoy it.

2002 St Hallet Old Block Shiraz- Sweet cedary oak and coffee, lipstick, polished leather, plums and dark fruit. Bloody expressive nose and a top notch wine with plenty of life left.

Two nights ago an 05 Seppelt Silverband Grampians Shiraz. Thin, weedy, minty and not to my liking at all. I got these cheap however I was quite disappointed. Probably the worst Seppelt wine I've ever had, especially as they are so reliable usually. Maybe it's in a hole or something. I'll leave the rest of the case a few years to see if it gets any better. At this stage 78

And last night a98 Veritas Christa Rolf shiraz grenache. Ah, now this is everything I love about the Barrossa. Big ribena nose which follows through to the palate complimented by plums and raspberries and a touch of licorice and spice. Drinking beuatifully with everything in balance and perfect weight. 94

Also, just noticed another new feature. If you Alt b to get bold it comes up with both the beginning and ending html instead of just the beginning. In fact, with a very quick test, it does this with the buttons and for all options too.

2008 Heggies Vineyard Riesling

I like it, still spritz (touch dissolved CO2), fresh as a daisy, loads of line and length, with a hint of delicacy that combines with intensity ( I know, sounds strange, but there you have it) ... hints of talc, limes, lemongrass, spice, citrus all combine. Then there is that long, minerally acid making the wine finish as crisp as could be.

Lovely fresh stuff, reminds me ... I must drink more Riesling!

In fact, I'd better pour another glass!

2006 is also the only BP I've had. Thought it was lovely. Very restrained and laid back.

Nice line up, very concise, expressive notes thanks Jeremy, Never tried any of these wines (such tastings don't venture this far north) but do have a bottle of the Teusner for some year in the future.

2003 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Kabinett
AP 35671421204. Glowing yellow gold. Honeysuckle and wax. Broad, spritzy yet soft palate of honey, rich yellow peach fruit. Forward in the mouth that slip slided away and finished with some acid kissing the cheeks. Excellent wine and believe it or not an excellent match for linguini carbonara.

Yesterday a 2008 Hoddles Creek Pinot Noir Funky nose with just a hint of caramel (often get this on Yarra pinots). A palate of clean and pure slightly stalky fruit. Finishes short but I bet that that will change with time. Good/Very Good and a bargain. Unfortunately didn't work with a cock-a-leekie pie.

Couple of recently acquired (arrived today) auction quaffers tonight

2005 Killara Estate Yarra Valley Chardonnay. SC. 13.5%.
Nice in a slightly worked style with some tropical fruit, nutty oak and a hint of creamy malo (not OTT). Overall....hmmm.. Very Good (just).

Cleanskin 2004 Hamilton Ewell Barossa Grenache Shiraz. SC. Can't be bothered going downstairs to the case to find out the booze content
Thought this would be past it from the colour, but it is in the "not too shabby" class. Slightly sweet, mainly savoury, light and moreish. No depth to speak of, but complimented the chicken madras nicely and was good enough to drink on its own afterwards. Good to Very Good.
