2008 Mike Press Wines Adelaide Hills Shiraz (Screwcap): Dark to inky purple. Sweet, perfumed nose of jelly babies/ raspberry cordial, the vanillin/banana oak obviously there, yet not OTT; further breathing reveals hints of tea rose, red licorice and coal. Sweet entry of blackberry/cherry fruit and malty oak, leading to a dry, tannic mid-palate, finishing long and grippy with slightly tangy fruit, banana oak and dried herb characters off in the distance. Seems a little more oak-influenced than previous vintages, but the stuffing and acid is still there. Still a top quaff, not matter how you look at it.
Cheers,
Ian

Having been burnt by the Mikes Press Merlot, which I really did not take to, I'm a bit hesitant to try this one - should I put my fears behind me and give it a go, or am I likely to dislike it too on the same basis?

I think it's probably best to get hold of a single bottle to try first - check your PM for details.

Hi Ian,
I have always enjoyed reading your reviews as they are normally very comprehensive and spot on!. I have just bought a case of the 2008 Mike Press Shiraz. Will it get better over the next few years and how long will it be good for?.
Cheers

I swilled heaps of the MP cab 07, preferred it to the shiraz 06 and 07. Seriously thinking of getting another case if there's any left by the time I make up my mind to spend the relatively low price for it's slurpability.

I've only tried it a couple of times, but I think the key will be how tolerant you are of the sweet/banana oak. A good chunk of the last bottle I had was sitting in the fridge the good part of two weeks (courtesy of a bout of the flu in between when I opened it and finished it off) - it was well and truly alive when I got back to it, but the oak was even more noticeable. I really should get around to opening another bottle before saying this, but the impression I have at the moment is it should be drunk before the 07, and after the 06 vintage. I think Campbell Mattinson said something along the lines of let it settle a year or so, then polish it off within five which seems to dovetail with my thoughts at present.
Cheers,
Ian
