Proposed theme: magnums - go hard or go home (or the hospital)

I'll start (conveniently morphed into Scott's ending in 9 theme) - 1999 Orlando Lawsons Shiraz magnum

My last experience with Golden Boy was such that the chilli would wipe out any wines tasted.

Magnum theme sounds intriguing.

Hi Ian, if we go down the road of the magnum theme, does it need to be from the 99 vintage...apologies if I have this wrong.

Hunter don't mind the aged whites but probably not golden boy...more like Sammy's at the bay with a couple of dozen oysters and a cray to follow.

Cheers Craig

Does anyone have a problem with Cliche again?

Also it may be a little unreasonable to expect everyone will have magnums.

Hot chilli dishes are a serious no-no for me since my operation, as much as I love spicy food when it comes to chilli I pay too heavy a price the next day or so.

Any vintage will do.

I am sure some people may be prepared to pair up under the circumstances, and there are a few fine wine retailers in Adelaide that have magnums freely available if people are willing to look (I am obviously not going to mention them here in respect to our host Gavin's business, but they are not that hard to find).

Thinking Holy Moly batman 12 mags? Looking at the pics of last years Langtons '8' theme offy it appears we benched about 18-20 bottles. So 12 mags isn't such a crazy thing. Go hard? Time to bust out the Jero's people.

Magnums sound great. I have a couple that need drinking soon. 1996 Pyrus and a 1995 Lanson if I can find it. Don't mind cliche but would prefer somewhere in the city.

Happy to go with magnums. Most of mine are more recent vintages, so I'll either source something with a bit of age, or bring a Champagne magnum to help kick things off.

So, I take it that this event is a goer? I am up for it.
Clique Exhibition is a good venue, certainly I felt for the Wendouree offline it worked well. I am very happy however, on the advice of other Adelaide punters to go elsewhere.
Surprisingly, don't have a lot of magnums. The cellar sort out is NOW finished, and I know there are a couple boxes of mixed stuff floating around. I will go down and pick something...maybe 20 year old Victorian Shiraz or a likely Coonawarra suspect.

Cheers
Craig

Cliche is fine. Not many magnums in my cellar but could bring a Dutschke Oscar Semmler Shiraz 2006 Magnum.
Cheers, Mario.

Hi all

I will firm up the reservation this week at Cliche for our table of 12. I think for anyone that doesn't have a magnum in their cellar just bring along a couple of bottles in lieu. That way it takes the pressure off and the need for anyone to purchase.

Cheers Craig

Option 1

Cliche Exhibition at 7pm. Banquet Menu + Corkage ($15 bottle)
Only table available is the rear of down stairs due to an engagement party upstairs.

Option 2

Ruby Red Flamingo at 8pm Banquet Menu $49pp + Corkage ($15 bottle)
Only table available is next to the bar upstairs for those of you that may know.

Neither of these option are private rooms.

Please let me know your thoughts. Happy elsewhere if the privacy/noise is an issue.

Cheers
David

Of the two banquet menus I would lean towards Cliche. It sounds like we could be squeezed into a corner which ever venue we choose...

Id like to propose that the theme is re-considerd.
Personaly, I would prefer quality over quantity.
And i can see alot ov old dirty Barossa shiraz being brought to the table.
I also think its a bit silly when alot of us have a thousand plus bottles in the cellar. And some will need to go out and buy a magnum to fit the position.

mate I'm kinda with you here. The only Magnum I have that i would consider being worthy is 2011 Lakes Folly Cabernets. I'm thinking there's years in front of this. Instead i was gonna bring an 09 Jasper Hill Emily's Paddock and a 2010 Clonakilla SV or hunt another Mag at auction.

I am not sure where the old dirty Barossa shiraz comment comes from. Only one person has suggested bringing Barossa Shiraz. Most people have indicated magnums which sound pretty interesting.

Seriously guys, if you had problems with the theme why didn'y you say something immediately when I suggested it two weeks ago? A month's notice is plenty of time to find something that fits the theme and is not necessarily "old dirty Barossa Shiraz". As far as the "quality over quantity" comment goes, you can still pick quality regardless of the size of bottle, and as Scott has mentioned there has been a shitload of bottles at previous offlines (especially after the spares have usually been opened).

If you guys have a new theme suggestion fine, but make up your mind bloody quick. If I don't like it, don't be surprised if I bail on this thing.

Hey, the answer is simple for those who have thousands of bottles of older wine and onlyyoung magnum: bring a pair of bottles. This was mentioned earlier in the thread.

Mahmoud.

For those that have agreed to attend (I will send out the confirmation list soon) there is no need to bring a magnum. As I said prior I don't want people to go out and purchase a magnum when most of you have cellars full of wine already. Just bring a great bottle that you are excited about and would be very proud to share with the group.

Lets move on and get people excited about this dinner again. I think the lack of people's response would suggest there isn't much interest in the magnum theme Ian. Maybe the next dinner that you arrange magnum will obviously be the theme.

Can everyone put forward the wine they would like to bring along. I will start it off with a Standish Lamella.

Here's to to a great offline!

Hoping there's an emerging consistency to a little fine wine drinking in ADL as I'm retiring there and I' sure going to miss HKG. I awoke in Malaysia this morning and flew a lazy sector home though now, eyeballs hanging out at 1230am, I'm now preparing 18 bottles of Barolo for dinner tonight! Not sure I could cope with all this excitement in later years but regular offlines will be neat.

Wish I could make this one. Magnums rock! I hunt them now and have plenty and could have shared with those who don't.

I would have added to the magnum theme. Swinging magnums! You take somebody elses magnum home and report next evening's performance. There will be plenty of vino leftover I'm sure and an interesting extension on the theme as oxygen can do a little magic in this format.

Hi all, the loss of magnums is a shame (looked like some interesting variation of bottles in there, with only one Barossa, from what I could see).

Based on the initial discussions, I'd already sourced an LP champers magnum, so I'll still bring that if no one has any objections, allowing us to kick off the evening with a round of bubbles. Cheers, Adele
