Well done Roger.
I am GEORGE WYNDHAM - the father of Australian Shiraz
George became the father of Australian Shiraz after planting the first commercial Shiraz vineyard in 1830.
George Wyndham (1801-1870), pioneer farmer, pastoralist and vigneron was born at Dinton House, Wiltshire, into an old and prominent English landowning family. Educated at Harrow and Cambridge with a view to taking a living in the Church (of England) held by the family, he preferred to make his own way in the world.
In 1824 he travelled through Canada with John Galt, the prominent Georgian novelist and Secretary to the Canada Company. In 1825 he spent a year touring Europe, studying viticulture and winemaking, as one aspect of his Grand Tour.
Following his marriage to Margaret Jay in 1827 he decided to emigrate to New South Wales as the Colonial Office was offering a free grant of 640 acres (260 hectares) for every £500 ($1000) of capital, with a maximum of 2560 acres (1040 hectares).
George and Margaret arrived in Sydney on Boxing Day 1827 on the "George Home" with several servants, cattle, sheep, horses, pigs, hounds, goods and chattels. He purchased 2000 acres (810 hectares) at Branxton in January 1828 and renamed it Dalwood after one of his father's farms at Dinton.
The world-wide reputation of the Hunter Valley as a producer of premium quality wines owes much to George Wyndham and especially his son John.
Despite the loss of all vines in 1830 George persevered and later pressings in his first vintage were successful. He subsequently planted a further 38 acres of vines at Dalwood, 12 acres at Fernhill and about 25 acres at Bukkulla, Inverell.
The vineyard at Dalwood is now the oldest producing vineyard in Eastern Australia.

This week, that is.
After all, we spent years trashing the brand, to the point where there was barely a Hunter wine in a Wyndham bottle.
Now, with a certificate in Wine Marketing, we're going to make it great again.
Unless we get distracted and want to focus on something else.
After all, consumer attitudes is where it's at.
We have great hopes for a label redesign, and a brand repositioning.
