Re: POLL: Would you pay $1,000 for the 2021 Hill of Grace?

Last vintage of HofG I bought was 2002. It’s 3 x that at auction now? How’s that a dead market? List other Aussie wines that appreciate in that manner? Not that it matters. If the Henschke’s sold Hill of Grace for $100 below market there would be thousands of miserable flippers hounding the winery ...

Malt in the city still allow BYO on Tuesday nights as far as I know.

The Roman Empire at Carindale permit BYO wine every night. Though it's more cafe than fine dining.

As others have posted, excellent thread, Hacker. It's always interesting to read about everyone else's wine journey and where they see their cellar heading in the future. My current top 5 producers, by volume, are: 1. Penfolds (122 btls, 6.7%) 2. Tyrrells (92 btls, 5.0%) 3. Wynns (91 btls, 5.0%) 4. ...

Re: Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Semillon 2002

Hi Mahmoud, I generally agree that shipping and heat are contributors. I've observed countless examples of non-refrigerated delivery trucks parked during a hot Brisbane summer, doors open, while offloading to wine merchants. When I think of the effort and expense I outlay in order to carefully store...

Re: Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Semillon 2002

That's frustrating. I've had 6 of these from the same case over the last 2 years and all have been horribly maderised. Colour was consistently dark yellow/copper and the wines smelled and tasted like sherry with a huge acid hit and no fruit remaining. All bottles sealed with cork, and the case was s...

Re: Cellar Conditioners

Thanks, Simon and Trev. I'm in the early stages of planning a cellar build under my high-set house and wasn't making much headway with the choice of conditioners. I've decided to go down the dedicated cellar conditioner route rather than modify a domestic air conditioning unit. My wines are currentl...

Simon,

If you're still around and reading this forum, which cellar conditioner did you end up installing?

Do you have any further feedback on the Inoa or Fondis options?

TIA

A few people from various fora have run these trials in the past. The main problem that seems to come up is bottle variation. Other than that, try to keep everything else constant - including temperature. If you intend to put the reference bottle in the fridge for a while to cool it down, make sure ...

Gianna, How warm was the Godolphin served? When I tasted this at 'proper' room temperature a couple of weeks ago I didn't notice the alcohol at all. Didn't seem syrupy to me either. I reported on both of these wines with and without extended exposure to air. In summary, the Amon Ra looked very impressive with air-time, and the Godolphin didn't. Compared with the 04's my gut feeling is that the 05 Amon Ra is similar in quality and style (perhaps more muscular), while the 05 Godo...

Raymond, TCD, I was fortunate enough to try a couple of these again over the weekend, but with a bit more 'air-time'. Glaetzer/Heartland tasting, Brisbane 06

A tasting with Ben Glaetzer at Wineaway in Brisbane last night. Tasted in order listed. Plate after plate of canapés were being offered to give us a chance of getting through all the wines in about 2 hours. Not all of the food matches were good, but they reduced palate fatigue somewhat. Heartland...

1998 Normans Langhorne Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc: Dark to inky red. The palate impressed me, opening with sweet cherry cola/coffee followed by peppery/choco...

Which Hunter Valley wineries?

I'm going to be down in the Hunter for a few days in late September for a conference. Some workmates who are also going suggested we do a wine tour on the arrival day (Monday) which we mostly have free (from arrival in Newcastle at 8:30ish til 5pm registration). It will be a small group, likely 5-6,...

Also in a later section information from Iain Riggs of Brokenwood that 3 out of 10 bottles of their cork-sealed semillons are undrinkable at 6 years from vintage, mostly due to random oxidation. Also another 3-4 of the 10 on the way out at that stage. Scary stats for semillon drinkers, he claims to...

As to the tax arguement, the tax on Oz wine is close to 43%, how much on a top end BMW (as a percentage)? Luxury car tax is 25% of the GST-exclusive portion over $57,009. So of your $211,500 BMW 750i purchase price, about $28,609 is Luxury Car Tax, and $16,626 is GST for a total of $45,235 in taxes...
