Re: Australian Pinot

Thanks for all of the responses - appreciate it. On balance it seems I’m not on my lonesome with having yet to to lock down a broad range of long term, must buy Aussie Pinot (probably not surprising given in real terms it’s still a somewhat newer and less proven variety - sounds weird but it’s all r...

Re: Australian Pinot

Its of absolutely no surprise to anyone here, but I think there's just two bottles of Ata Rangi Marlborough PN in the cellar, that someone gave to me as a gift. I have one memorable Pinot experience when I called Stephen George in about 1995 or thereabouts to come to the winery to collect my annual...

Re: Australian Pinot

I suggest you try Chatto - the flagship ‘Isle’ is my favourite but they have a number of styles in their range. Home Hill ‘Kelly’s Reserve’, and Tolpuddle are also worth trying imo Thanks - haven’t tried Chatto, will do some research into it. Tolpuddle is definitely on the list to try. Cheers, Ed

Australian Pinot

Hi all - I’m interested in tapping the collective wisdom and experience of the forum here. Aussie Pinot is not something I’ve got a huge amount of in my cellar (or Pinot generally). Part of the reason is I’ve never quite been truly “wowed” by the Australian versions of this variety. Palate preferenc...

2016 Levantine Hill Samantha’s Paddock Mélange Traditionnel (left bank BDX blend). Opened quite primary initially with red berry compote and some emerging cedar. Improved significantly with air after a 90 min decant, becoming more savoury and structured over the evening. Red earth, pencil shavings a...

2008 Leo Buring Leonay - High Eden. Still remarkably fresh and structural at 17 years. Nose of lime zest, citrus oil and light petroleum, with emerging talc/mineral notes. Palate is long, acid-driven and precise, carrying citrus and subtle apple through an extended finish. Less overtly tertiary than...

2011 Peter Lehmann Wines The Antiquus Shiraz - didn’t realise this was once their flagship wine, don’t drink much (any, really) Peter Lehmann. It’s a quality wine that’s got all the components but it’s “commercial” - I didn’t really find it that interesting. Thanks for the note Ed. I hadn't heard o...

Nice. I don’t think I’ve had a bad bottle of St Peter’s. It’s a great wine. Based on how a 1999 and 2003 have drunk over the past 12-24 months, and your note, I’d agree it’s still got a long life ahead.

Couple of bottles over lunch: 2022 Whisson Lake Pinot Noir - energetic, sour plum, cherry. 2008 Leo Buring Riesling Leopold Tasmania Opened quite tight but lifted nicely with air. Honey, melon and beeswax come through on the nose, with a gentle hint of petrol. The palate has softened into a waxy, honeyed citrus profile—more about texture and integration than primary fruit, with the acidit...

Opened a 2012 Hentley Farm “The Beauty” Shiraz and it’s in a really interesting place. The fruit has moved firmly into savoury territory—dark earth, spice, and a touch of dried herb—while still carrying some underlying richness and length. It feels more structured and robust than expected at this ag...

Thanks for the notes Allan.

I’m interested in adding some of the Isolation Ridge Riesling to my cellar - a bit of a point of difference to what I’ve got. Will have to sample a bottle soon.

Re: April 2026 purchases

Well yeah there are soo many discounted offers going for soo many good wines. It makes it a bit of a hard sell to buy anything on release outside of the cult wines that always sell out, as you’ll likely get in for cheaper down the track. It also makes me think is a repricing of the market in order ...

Re: Stagflation buying patterns?

Great discussion. I’ve been contemplating my go-forward position a lot in recent weeks, as reflecting on the cellar I’ve built over the last ~7 or so years with intent has probably been lacking a proper intent! There are lots of good to great Australian wines, however there are also a lot of wines t...

A few wines from the Easter weekend.

The Cullen from 2005 was under cork and amazingly primary still - these wines are really built to go the distance.

Enjoyed a 2010 Torbreck Run Rig, a few Clarendon Hills bottles (Grenache and Syrah) too.

A couple of us got together in Melbourne and enjoyed a very generous tasting of 2010 Burgundy with a Rockford Black Shiraz courtesy of Con who kindly opened up some treasures from his cellar. Enjoyed alongside a great lunch at Tzaki (I’m still full). The 2010 Burgundy included (apologies if my Burgu...

Re: TN: WA reds with dinner

Thanks for the notes.

I must say that I’ve enjoyed a lot of MR Cabernet and while I sometimes get the “green” sentiment, I can’t say it’s been a common experience. Maybe it’s just me.

That Leeuwin should go another 10+ EASY I’d have thought. Yes I’m showing my bias.

Thanks for the notes.

I’m 40 and have about 1200 bottles in storage and probably another 40 in the Vintec (for aged or higher quality ready to go wines) and then another 50 or so quaffers on wine racks at home that get drank and replaced. I started buying more seriously 6 or 7 years ago so most of my storage is somewhat ...

It’s a really good list.

I think the other contenders are Mt Ed, Mount Mary Quintet, Giaconda Chardonnay, Rockford BP, Wendouree Shiraz and maybe at a pinch Wynns JR and Penfolds St Henri.

Wynns 2021 Black Label Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon (13.4%). First of a 6-pack and the first BL bought since the 2012 vintage. 2002 under cork. Pencil shaving, cigar box, dark fruits, great balance, excellent wine. The 2010 by comparison has a lighter fruit profile, more primary, still a good wine but needs another 10 years to hang together. Screwcap.
