Re: Article: Robert Parker retires from The Wine Advocate
I used to like Galloni’s reviews but too many 96-100 point awards mean his scores are no longer meaningful and the notes themselves don’t convey any useful information. The other reviewers on his site are good for me , Neal Martin, Tanzer etc and I like the videos and other bits and pieces on there.

Re: A brief Willamette Valley trip report
What did you think of the Chardonnay when you were there? They really talk about their Pinot and some of it is pretty good..but I think their Chardonnay is even better... I would second this comment - Chardonnays on the whole seem better and haven't been grown there as long as pinot. Evening Land a...

Re: Tips for a rookie wine collector
Of course it is a case of "Everyone is going to need to determine the right cellaring strategy for themselves". Too much overheating in prior posts, when that is the simple truth. What I've taken from the discussion is to keep reevaluating what I'm buying and why, and do I need to change ...

Re: Tips for a rookie wine collector
I used to get a combination of 3x or 6x of wines to cellar. Mainly focused on specific regions (Burg and Piedmont) which I am aware carries a risk of tastes changing but I am happy to take the risk. I did, however, relocate to the US for work and so the location of my wine storage in Sydney wasn't i...

Good timing Tim. I ordered a 4-pack last week to test out and wondered if it was possible to use them across a number of bottles.

Re: The Barolo / Barbaresco / Nebbiolo thread
I like the Vietti Rocche but not such a fan of the other crus. However, I have never bought Vietti in Australia due to the inflated pricing. I was able to buy Rocche in the US for less than ~US$160 a bottle including some back vintages up until a year or so ago. I think pricing in Australia is close...

I've also moved onto using the Wine Mummy with a t-shirt etc wrapped around. I had been using a sturdy wine carry bag but it would take up too much space. No issues as yet.

A bit more oak reliant than the Leflaives but still a quality wine. Bit more rounded, bigger and in your face.

Haha! I have one of those - thinking now its past the point of worrying about whether its got the pox or not. To be fair the GCs that I've had from Boillot have largely not met expectations but the 1ers hit the spot for me.
Good to hear the Leflaives were sound.

1994 Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Semillon purchased from auction got me into collecting my own stuff. 2005 PYCM Meursault Perrieres got me onto the White Burg trail. Nebbiolo was a longer and more slippery slope that came from visiting Italy - 2001 Moccagatta Bric Balin.

Re: The Barolo / Barbaresco / Nebbiolo thread
I prefer to double decant and then leave in the bottle in the morning. Then you can take a quick taste later in the day to see how its going and decide whether or not to have a longer decant before drinking. I know some think to slow o only but I think you benefit from giving the wine a bit of air i...

Ian - below notes are stolen from Red Smurf: 1999 Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe Slow ox’d all day and decanted at the table. First wiff is melting bitumen and a bunch of hung flowers. Very giving on the nose. Wow, we are in Neb territory that’s for sure! Toasted and cha...

If you were to open one of these two bottles this weekend, which would you choose and what would be your decanting treatment? 2004 Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis 2001 Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Vignolo I had a 1999 Vigna San Giuseppe a couple of months ago which had a double decant in the morning,...

Me too. We'll all be in the soup though with the 13 Monvigliero that bloody Galloni rated 100 points recently. Grrrr. I was surprised to see this and the scores he gave the other Burlotto wines for 2013 - whilst he has given mid 90's scores he has sometimes been a bit down on the Monvigliero. Looks...

Re: The Barolo / Barbaresco / Nebbiolo thread
2012 Burlotto Barolo had this over a couple of nights. It was very light on its feet on night one, floral and delicate, some cherry, orange peel and a little grip on the tannins. Day two there was more structure, tannins had a lot more grip but the nose and palate had opened up a bit more. Really l...

Re: The Barolo / Barbaresco / Nebbiolo thread
I generally buy and drink younger wines to try before buying. Sometimes this is not always possible though. Otherwise look to cellar for ~10-15 before drinking depending on vintage.
Some base wines (Massolino, Burlotto, Brovia, Produttori) I'll pretty much go for young. No need to wait.

Have been drinking some US wines over the last couple of weeks... 2013 Cameron Rouge Clos Electrique - Oregon Pinot, red fruit, savoury earthiness, touch of funk, really really good. 2013 Cameron Blanc Clos Electrique - Oregon Chardonnay, quite light on its feet, citrus profile, good long finish, we...

Has anyone had much experience with Azelia and there reserve's ?? I've tasted some of the Cru's and have a few, although not had the Riserva Voghera Brea. I like the wines, Bricco Fiasco tends to be brighter, medium bodied, the Margheria and San Rocco are darker fruited, bigger scaled wines. Marghe...

Thanks for the info on Fontanafredda - probably not on my buy again list but always interested to try nonetheless. 1990 Fontanafredda Barolo Riserva I picked up a few (relatively) older Barolo to crack into over Christmas and NY. Always conscious of conditions of this older stuff but the cork here was in good nick and the wine was in good shape. Had a 3+ hour decant - it was solid but nothing spectacular. Good ...

Re: The Barolo / Barbaresco / Nebbiolo thread
A lot of oak hate! I think the quality, age and toasting regime plays a big part. My preference is for neutral oak and botti but I also enjoy B/B with some form of french oak/barrique. For example, Vietti and Azelia use small barrels with new oak in various proportions for some of their wines. It is...
